What is dimensional weight shipping?
Dimensional weight, often shortened to DIM weight, converts package volume into a theoretical weight. FedEx describes DIM weight as the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight and says the greater value is used for the shipment.
The logic is straightforward. Delivery vehicles and aircraft have limited cubic capacity. A truck can reach its space limit before it reaches its weight limit when it carries oversized, lightweight cartons. How to calculate dimensional weight
The basic calculation has two steps:
- Multiply the package length by width by height to find its cubic size.
- Divide the cubic size by the carrier’s dimensional divisor, then apply the carrier’s rounding rules.
FedEx currently publishes a divisor of 139 for U.S., Puerto Rico, and international shipments. Its formula is:
Length x width x height in inches / 139 = dimensional weight in pounds
Measure the outside of the finished, sealed package, including any bulges. Follow the carrier’s exact rounding method. UPS instructs shippers to identify the longest side as length and round package dimensions up to the nearest whole number. A fraction of an inch can therefore affect the cubic total.
